Little city, big on taste

Have you ever raced pigs around an obstacle course? Or stirred up a storm with seaweed? How about baking your own pizza in a wood fired pizza oven on wheels? No?! Then you obviously missed this year’s Really Wild Food Festival, held annually in a field just outside the pocket-handkerchief-sized city of St David’s.

Each year sees a different selection of fascinating demonstrations, local artisan food producers and eclectic entertainment for the whole family. Our favourite things from this year’s festival included:

  • Eating sizzling hot boar-gers, venison and locally-reared rare breed pork straight from the grill
  • Watching the chainsaw carving demo, where one man produced a bird of prey statue (& a lot of sawdust) in next to no time with just a chainsaw
  • Sampling local ales, ciders & perrys (the proper stuff, none of that pear cider malarkey), around 40 local cheeses – including that common-or-garden flavour: chocolate cheese – and literally hundreds of jams, chutneys and other preserves
  • Picking up foraged goodies for the fridge & larder, such as pickled samphire, elderflower cordial, laver pesto & rosehip sauce
  • Weaving simple decorations with willow with the little ones
  • Having afternoon tea in the sun, whether you opt for the full-on bone china & doilies experience or the brownies, cakes & flapjacks with foraged (mainly from the seashore) ingredients – don’t knock spaghetti seaweed cookies until you’ve dunked them in your coffee!
